What Does Cinnamon Smell Like?

Long beloved by food enthusiasts, bakers, and anyone with a penchant for warm spice scents, cinnamon also happens to be huge in the perfume world, and with good reason. The warm aroma of cinnamon is a welcome breath of fresh air during the colder months. Like a crackling fire on a cold night, there’s just something inherently cozy about cinnamon, making it a perfect scent for fall or winter perfumes.

Aromatically, cinnamon smells spicy and vanilla-like. It’s warm but far from heavy. It’s sweet enough to add depth to a perfume without being too cloying, so that the fragrance doesn’t become overpowering.

And since cinnamon has this signature spicy aroma that goes with just about everything else, it’s very versatile when it comes to perfume creation. For starters, it goes very well with citrus top notes, including orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, and bergamot. It can also dial up the sensual factor when combined with florals such as magnolia, rose, ylang-ylang, or lily of the valley. The same is true of warmer, spicier notes – members of the same fragrance family almost always complement each other. We’re talking about your typical gourmands: notes like myrrh, star anise, coffee, sage, juniper, and clove.

Our Favorite Cinnamon Perfumes

The holiday season is a time to indulge in everything you love. And while cozy sweaters and blankets are obvious ways to do so in the colder seasons, nothing quite completes the festive spirit like a bottle of cinnamon-oil-infused perfume. Here are a few of our favorites.

It’s hard not to love Christian Dior’s Dolce Vita. While a tiny bit spicy, it’s not overpowering. And more importantly, it’s deliciously warm and sweet. Several notes contribute to this effect, including peach, sandalwood, cardamom, and of course, cinnamon. And then there’s Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium. Orange and bergamot provide a very citrusy opening, followed by the main actors: warm cinnamon and feisty pepper, only barely softened by jasmine, myrrh, patchouli, and ylang-ylang. We also have to give props to Kilian’s Angels’ Share. With a distinct apple-like cognac note and plenty of cinnamon blended in, this is a sweet, albeit slightly boozy unisex fragrance that both men and women can enjoy. Further enhancing its luxury appeal are the scents of praline, vanilla, and sandalwood.

Where To Buy Cinnamon Perfumes

Cinnamon is the quintessential fall/winter aroma, conjuring up images of cold, rainy days spent cozied up inside the house, with bowls of steaming soup and mugs of hot cocoa in hand.
