In its raw form, amber is a time-hardened resin obtained from the giant prehistoric conifer Pinus Succinifera. However, somewhat confusingly, this isn’t the actual ingredient used in amber perfumes. Instead, amber in perfumery refers to a fantasy note (or fragrance family) made up of a basic accord of labdanum, vanilla, and benzoin. This combination of notes smells sweet and cozy and may even have an animalic quality about them, depending on the mix. Expect loads of warmth, sophistication, and just a pinch of titillating seductiveness.
The best amber perfumes evoke thoughts of amber-hued leaves falling gently to the ground, blazing fires in a cozy fireplace, and warm cashmere blankets wrapped around you on a cold night. In other words, they’re perfect for fall and winter, when the weather is cool, and the days are shorter. They’re also great for layering with different scents to create your own signature scent.
